Gelitin’s Self-Portrait with a Bird in Midsummer on the Meadow is a wistful nod to Edward Munch’s painting Self-Portrait with a Bottle.

The earthy colors—ranging from yellow through brown to green—and the light blue of the tablecloths in Munch’s painting resemble the colors of the South Styrian landscape and the summer sky with its drifting clouds. The bottle and the bird are slender, brown, good-natured, or dangerous.

The bottle and the bird are free; they can be there, but they don’t have to be.

Pichla

The Nature Conservation Union Styria was able to purchase the property in Pichla near Bad Radkersburg for restoration using funds donated by Karl Karner from the sale of small sculptures. In the future, art projects that address ecological needs will also be carried out here.
